Background

I have an MA in English Language and Literature from The Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil; a Diploma in the Teaching of English Overseas (Dip.TEO) from the University of Manchester, and a Ph.D. in English from The University of Birmingham. I was formerly Professor of English Language and Applied Linguistics at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil where I taught for many years.

Teaching

The courses I teach are: Discourse, Culture and Communication, Media Language, Language and Gender, Narrative Analysis, and Translation Studies. I am the academic tutor for the MA programme in Translation Studies at CELS and I also convene the new MA programme in Critical Discourse, Culture and Communication, also at CELS.

Research

My research focuses on the critical analysis of a variety of texts. I am currently investigating how identities are construed semiotically in discourse and how multi-modes of communication contribute to the overall meanings of texts. A particular interest is the question of how gender and cultural representations are realised in the discourse of the media and in new technologies.
