Nicholas Groom has an MA in TESOL from the University of London and a PhD in Corpus Linguistics from the University of Birmingham. He has worked at schools and universities in Australia, England, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam, and given conference papers, seminars and consultancies in China, France, Italy, Japan, Korea, Spain, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates, as well as in the UK.

Nick is the Coordinator for the Distance MA programmes in TEFL/TESL, Translation Studies and Applied Linguistics, and the convenor of the Birmingham MPhil(B) in Corpus Linguistics. He also teaches on the full-time campus-based MA courses offered here at CELS. 

Nick's research interests lie principally within the field of corpus linguistics, and in the application of corpus linguistics to issues in language education and discourse analysis. His current work involves using corpus-driven methods to identify and analyse the characteristic features of specialized discourses.

Nick is currently the Newsletter Editor for the British Association for Applied Linguistics, and a member of the Association's Executive Committee.

Supervision

Nick is interested in supervising MA, MPhil and PhD research in the following areas:

  • Corpus linguistics
  • Discourse analysis
  • English language learning and teaching
  • Anything that combines any of the above.
